Asset Locates are generally used in two different ways.  One, the client requests that we conduct searches for recorded assets through our databases or Two, we help the client paint a complete picture of their targets financial situation.  In either case knowing the financial status of the target of the investigation can be used to make a decision on facts rather than speculation.

TYPICAL REASONS FOR AN ASSET LOCATE

1. Divorce
2. Prior to filing litigation
3. During litigation and the defendant claims poverty
4. Judgment recovery ( Do you have an unsatisfied court ordered judgment? ) We can help!
5. Internal corporate Investigations

Asset locates are often used to develop an argument against a defendant in a divorce, lawsuit or settlement. In this case the asset search or investigation may show the Financial Health of a person or company.

Suspicions of internal theft or embezzlement by an employee can lead to speculation and lots of questions about where their money comes from.  Asset locate searches can be conducted and when property or other assets are located you may find assets that actually belong to you.

There are two basic ways to search for assets:

1. An online database and / or court record search for assets.

2. An Asset Locate Investigation

A quality asset Locate Investigation takes time and resources. Before trusting an online search, most online database searches simply aren’t telling a complete story. Missing pieces are what lead to false accusations and misinformation to poor decision-making.

In divorce cases would you know if your spouse was hiding assets from you? In most families, one spouse controls the finances.  As a marriage comes to an end and divorce draws near, the spouse in control can substantially increase his / her share of the financial pie by hiding assets from the unknowing or family member long before the divorce is announced.

You are always advised to contact your attorney for any legal advice. Attorneys typically cost hundreds of dollars an hour for their services.  A typical private investigator charges only a fraction of what an attorney would charge.

We at Peak investigations can start to help you by guiding you in some self-help discovery.  Sometimes you find what you were looking for right under your nose.  That’s why the first place to look when you were concerned that your spouse is hiding assets is your own home. Your spouse’s mail has been coming to your house.  Years of documents are stored in your spouse’s den or desk drawers.  This should be the first step in your discovery process. the best practice is for you to gather all financial documentation that you might think will be relevant to your divorce case, make copies, and return the originals.

It is not uncommon for a spouse to hide assets especially if the divorce has been planned for quite a while.  People hide assets for a variety of reasons, but essentially they have property or money that they do not want to have discovered.

This is where a private investigator can help you search for assets, along with assets that are documented at the courthouse or other places.  The spouse may have opened businesses or bought property to hide this cash or other assets in.  Our clients are given an extensive list of places that information about hidden assets can be located.

We partner with local CPA’s with experience in divorce cases.  Much of the time you’ll need your attorney to get access to many sources of information that may lead to any hidden assets, such as access to bank information.  However, getting as much information as you can for your attorney where you do not have to pay for their expensive time can be very financially beneficial to you.
